The clearest evidence comes from the Pew Research Center's July 2025 study, which analysed 68,879 unique Google searches from 900 US adults during March 2025. About one in five searches (18%) produced an AI summary. When a summary appeared, users clicked a traditional organic result in only 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary was present, roughly half the click rate. They clicked a source link inside the AI summary itself in just 1% of visits. And browsing sessions ended outright on 26% of pages with an AI summary, versus 16% of pages with only traditional results. The AI reads the answer to the user, the user is satisfied, and the user leaves.
So a citation buys you visibility and influence. It does not, by itself, buy you a pageview. If your revenue depends on the pageview, that gap matters a great deal.
Why the distinction matters for ad-funded publishers
The revenue chain for a Raptive, Mediavine or AdSense site is simple: a visit loads your page, your ad slots render, impressions fire, and you earn. A citation breaks that chain at the first link. The content is consumed inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview, where none of your ad slots exist. You supplied the answer and captured none of the monetisation.
That is why citation volume is best treated as a visibility KPI, a measure of how often AI systems find your work worth surfacing, and never as a substitute for sessions or pageviews. The two live in different columns of the spreadsheet, and conflating them will flatter your numbers while your ad revenue stays flat.
Can I be cited by AI without getting any traffic?
Yes, routinely, and there are two distinct behaviours that produce it.
Retrieval-augmented answers. The engine fetches your page live to compose or support an answer, then cites it. The user reads the answer in-app and rarely clicks through. This is the citation-without-visit case in its purest form: your page was used, your page was credited, and no session appeared in your analytics.
Training crawls. The engine ingests your content to train a model. There is no citation and no referral at all. Your words may shape millions of future answers, and you will never see a single line in your logs tied to a visit.
The scale of this imbalance is documented. Cloudflare's July 2025 crawl-to-click analysis measured how many pages each AI company crawled for every visit it referred back. Anthropic crawled roughly 38,065 pages per referred visit. OpenAI crawled roughly 1,091. Google traditional search, by comparison, ran at about 5.4 to 1. Read those ratios as the answer to the question. For every visit an AI engine sends you, it may have consumed your content hundreds or tens of thousands of times over. Being cited, or simply crawled, without traffic is not an edge case. It is the default state of the AI web.
When a citation does turn into a visit, is that visit valuable?
Yes, disproportionately so, which is the one piece of good news in the picture. AI referral traffic is small in volume but high in intent. Similarweb data put AI platforms at about 1.13 billion referral visits in June 2025, against about 191 billion from Google search, under 1% of Google's scale, though AI referrals had grown 357% year on year. The direction of travel is up; the absolute base is still tiny.
But those visitors behave differently once they arrive. A Microsoft Clarity study across more than 1,200 publisher and news sites found AI-referred traffic converted to sign-ups at 1.66%, against 0.15% for search and 0.13% for direct, roughly 10 times the rate. The user has often been pre-qualified by the AI conversation before they click, so they land warmer. The lesson is not that citations are worthless. It is that the rare citation that becomes a visit is worth capturing well, while the majority that never convert to a visit still need to be measured as influence rather than counted as traffic.
Where are AI citations counted, if not in my analytics?
This is where most publishers go wrong. They open GA4 or Search Console, see little to no AI traffic, and conclude AI is not touching them. In reality the citation is happening somewhere your standard reports cannot see it.
Google Search Console folds AI into ordinary organic
Search Console does not let you isolate AI Overviews or AI Mode. They are folded into the Web search type in the Performance report alongside standard organic, with no filter to split AI-driven impressions and clicks from ordinary ones. Worse, a click out of a Google AI Overview reports as ordinary organic search, not as an AI source, so even a click that came from an Overview is invisible as such.
The accounting rules make a citation register as an impression, not a visit. Per Google's Search Console Help, an AI Overview occupies a single position and all its links inherit that position. A citation link counts as an impression only once it is scrolled or expanded into view, so collapsed citations do not count until revealed. Only a click to an external page counts as a click, and multiple appearances of the same URL on one results page are aggregated into one impression. So the citation lands in your impression column, at a shared position, and produces no visit unless someone clicks out.
GA4 recognises only some AI sources, and misroutes the rest
GA4 rolled out a native AI Assistant channel in mid-2026, reaching broad availability around 7 June 2026. Sessions from a recognised AI domain are tagged with the AI Assistant Default Channel Group, medium ai-assistant. But the recognised list is short. Per Google's published Default Channel Group definition, it covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok. Perplexity is absent and its visits stay in Referral, and Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks continue to report as Organic Search. There is no retroactive reclassification either, so historical AI sessions stay wherever they were first bucketed.
The bigger leak is the referrer itself. AI chat apps and embedded browsers frequently strip or omit the referrer header, so a large share of genuine AI-referred sessions arrive with no referring domain and are bucketed as Direct in GA4. As Google's own guidance notes, copied links, app-based clicks and referrer-less sessions still land in Direct, and the new channel cannot recover them. Even the AI traffic you do earn is largely hiding in your Direct channel, misattributed.

The short version: citations are counted inside the AI products and, partially, in your server logs, not cleanly in the analytics dashboards you already use. If you rely on GA4 and Search Console alone, you are measuring the visit and missing the citation entirely.
How do I measure AI citations and AI visits for my site?
Measure them as two separate things, because they are two separate things. Use three complementary sources.
1. Server logs, to see the citation-driving fetches
The crawlers that generate citations are identifiable by published user-agent tokens and, for most vendors, published IP ranges. This is how you separate a citation-driving live fetch from a pure training crawl.
- OpenAI runs distinct bots, documented in its crawler overview: GPTBot is training ingestion; OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search results and citations; ChatGPT-User is a user-triggered live page fetch; OAI-AdsBot validates ad landing pages. Only OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User relate to answers that can produce citations. GPTBot is pure ingestion.
- Anthropic runs ClaudeBot (training), Claude-User (a user-initiated fetch that can produce a source link) and Claude-SearchBot (search-quality indexing). Allowing one does not allow the others, so match on all three.
Verify these against the vendor's published IP ranges, not the user-agent alone, which is spoofable. OpenAI publishes its ranges at openai.com/searchbot.json and openai.com/gptbot.json, and Anthropic publishes its verifiable ranges too. An IP-range match is the authoritative signal in your logs. Reading logs this way tells you which pages AI systems fetch to answer questions, the leading edge of your citation footprint.
2. Search Console, for AI Overview appearance
You cannot cleanly isolate AI Overviews in Search Console, but appearance and impression trends at page level are still a usable proxy for where Google is surfacing you inside AI answers. Treat a rise in impressions with a falling click-through rate as a signal that you are being cited more and clicked less, which is exactly the citation-not-visit pattern.
3. AI-referral segments in analytics, for the visits that do land
To capture the visits, build a segment that combines the recognised AI Assistant channel with the sources GA4 misses. Include Perplexity referrals sitting in your Referral channel, and inspect your Direct channel for AI-referred sessions that arrived without a referrer. This will not be perfect, given the referrer loss, but it recovers far more of your genuine AI traffic than the default AI Assistant channel alone.
Putting it together: a worked example
Say a single article is fetched 5,000 times in a month by OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot (from logs), appears in Google AI Overviews with 20,000 impressions (from Search Console), and sends you 40 sessions you can attribute across the AI Assistant channel, Perplexity referral, and identified Direct (from GA4). The citation footprint is large, the visit footprint is tiny, and the gap between them is the story. Only those 40 sessions rendered your ads. The other signals are influence, not income. Track all three over time, and never add the citation numbers to the visit numbers as if they were the same currency.
